Al Weed Campaign Volunteer of the Week: Gordon Koerner of Nelson County
Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

Gordon Koerner has been an active supporter of Al Weed since before the campaign, and he shows no signs of letting up. Since early in this campaign, Gordon has volunteered for essential, time-consuming tasks – particularly helping with mail drops in the southern part of the 5th Congressional District, often at very short notice; and supporting Al at public gatherings like last weekend’s Buckingham Days parade and festival.
A series of fortuitous events brought Gordon to the Al Weed campaign. A native of Pennsylvania, Gordon served in the Marine Corps before settling in Burns Harbor, Indiana. There he met and married his wife Judy, and worked for more than 30 years as an electrical engineering foreman for Bethlehem Steel. But Judy, who was born in Newport News, always considered Virginia her home. When they retired in 1999, they decided to settle not on the coast but in the mountains of Virginia. Nelson County won the prize.
Nelson County, of course, is Al Weed country. Gordon joined the Nelson County Democratic Committee and soon got to know Al. Why does Gordon support Al? "Al is a true patriot, serving our country so many years in the military. With his dedication to the wine industry and his strength to run for Congress, Al's patriotism seems to never end.”
Gordon is an avid golfer, enjoys yard work and puttering around with engines and things electrical, and he spends lots of time with his daughter and granddaughter (who share their home in Nelson). But he always seems to find the energy to work for the common good and our country’s future, by supporting our next Congressman, Al Weed.

Gordon attended the 5th Congressional District Democratic Convention on May 20th as a Candidate for Al Weed. After the convention was over, Gordon could be found characteristically quietly and without fanfare or acknowledgement taking down all of the Weed banners and signs put up for the day.

Thank you, Gordon – it is so good to know you, and to know we can count on you!
